What’s your favorite thing about Pittsburgh?
On my previous visits to Pittsburgh I have been impressed by the greenery. I have been most interested to hear of how Pittsburgh managed to combat pollution and make the city such a pleasant green place. I liked the people too!
What books are on your nightstand?
I usually have a very large pile – sometimes so large it topples over! I am currently reading a book of essays by the philosopher Roger Scruton, a book on Scottish history, a book on English painters of the nineteen thirties, and a book on food rationing during the Second World War.
Is there a book you’d like to see made into a film?
There are probably quite a few that I would like to see filmed. I would like to R.K. Narayan’s novels filmed. He was a great Indian writer whose books are little gems.
You have such a wonderful thread of humor in your books–where does that come from?
I suppose that I see the humorous side of life. I think that all sorts of humorous things happen in daily life – one just has to be prepared to see them.
What inspired you to write novels for middle grade readers, as well as adults?
I have written many books for younger readers over the years. I enjoy writing or children – the imagination can be given its freedom, and that can be great fun.
