A note from Marissa Landrigan, founder and curator of Acquired Taste, a Pittsburgh-based, food-themed reading series:
As some of you know, I’ve recently paired with Pittsburgh writer and editor Robyn Coggins to curate an anthology of excellent new and previously published creative nonfiction about food. That wording is intentional—we’re seeking traditional and nontraditional food-related writing in a book that we hope captures diverse and unusual ways to look at the daily deed.
A little background on the project: I started the Acquired Taste reading series in 2013 with the hope of elevating the literary world’s understanding of food writing to something beyond restaurant reviews and cookbooks. I knew there was innovative, vivid food writing out there but hadn’t seen it showcased in one place. The readings, thanks to all of you, were such a hit that I decided to expand Acquired Taste into an anthology—to build a space for these writers, to showcase their work to a national audience. I needed a co-editor, and Robyn immediately hopped on board, excited to tackle this challenging segment of CNF.
Above all, she and I want to offer a new take on the genre. Our hope is that this anthology will welcome a new, young audience to the table, while surprising an existing literary readership by including some of their favorite writers with food-related bylines.
So, as for the anthology: We’re open to creative nonfiction in any form or length up to 6,000 words, including personal narrative, literary journalism, cultural analysis, graphic memoir, or lyric/hybrid essays. We are especially interested in work that is playful, surprising, and fresh; work that confounds and expands our ideas of what “food writing” can be. Additionally, if you’ve published something before that you think might be a good fit, and for which you hold the rights, we’d love to reheat it and dish it out to a new readership.
More information on the anthology can be found here: http://acquiredtastepgh.com/the-book/. Submissions for the book are due December 31st. (And yes, we are doing our damnedest to get the authors paid.)
In the coming weeks, we’ll also be blogging about our favorite food, food writing, prompts to get you started, and other myriad gastro topics. Pitches and submissions for the blog are welcome at any time (though unfortunately unpaid).
Please submit and share! We’re tweeting at @AcqTastePgh and on Facebook, if you’d like more updates on the project.
Eat well, friends!
