PITTSBURGH, PA – City Books is pleased to announce Erica Hom and Leo Smith as Writers-in-Residence from July 1 – November 30, 2023.
“Erica Hom (she/her) is a teacher, artist, and queer Filipina diaspora writer originally from Long Island, New York. Her writing focuses on women’s experiences in immigration, inherited trauma, cryptids, ghosts, and unreal worlds. Her work has been featured by various publications including Honey Literary, The Arkansas International, ROOM magazine, and others. Her poem ‘Migrant Worker Love Letter’ was the winner of the C.D. Wright Emerging Poets Prize. She currently lives in Pittsburgh surrounded by many books, plants, and foster cats. IG: @ericadoingthings.
Leo Smith (they/them) is a Black, queer transmasc poet from Inglewood, California currently living in Pittsburgh. They are a Smith College graduate and author of the chapbook The Body’s Owner Speaks (Black Sunflowers Poetry Press, 2023). Leo’s current work centers on race, religion, and queer childhood. The writers will each receive a $500 stipend, discounts, and curation opportunities at City Books. In addition, Erica and Leo will spend at least 3-5 hours a week writing in the bookstore, and be available on Small Business Saturday (Nov. 25) and for media requests.
The City Books Writer’s Residency offers flexible access to a comfortable, creative space within Pittsburgh’s oldest existing bookstore for adult writers to develop new writing or to advance existing work-in-progress. The opportunity allows writers to pursue individual writing goals or projects without the expectation of a page count or publication. It is intended for local/regional writers within driving distance of the bookstore.”
