“Marianne Novy taught English literature at the University of Pittsburgh from 1971 until 2016. She began as a Shakespearean, approaching his plays with an emphasis on gender, and soon started teaching women writers as well. An adoptee in contact with her birthmother since 1976, she developed courses on how adoption is presented in literature, and wrote Reading Adoption on that topic, including discussion about how literature often presents myths that differ from what usually happens in real life. Her new book, Adoption Memoirs: Inside Stories, is about published memoirs by 45 people who actually experienced adoption, whether as birthmother, adoptee, or adoptive parent.
Lori Jakiela is the author of seven books, including the adoption memoir Belief Is Its Own Kind of Truth, Maybe, which received the Saroyan Prize for International Literature from Stanford University. Her eighth book, ALL SKATE: True Stories from Mid-Life, is forthcoming from Roadside Press in March 2025. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Pittsburgh Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Pittsburgh Quarterly, Lit Hub, Brevity, and more. She teaches in the Creative & Professional Writing Program at Pitt-Greensburg and the Doctor of Theology in Creative Writing Program at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Her author website is http://lorijakiela.net.”
