PulpFest Returns to Pittsburgh (August 7-10, 2025)!

From August 7 – 10, PulpFest will be returning to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, PA.

For over 50 years, PulpFest has celebrated mystery, adventure, science fiction, and other popular fiction. The pulp magazines of the early twentieth century — cheaply-priced all-fiction magazines printed on pulpwood paper — were the vessel where the hardboiled detective, science fiction, and sword and sorcery genres developed and flourished. The pulps gave us Buck Rogers, Conan the Barbarian, Cthulhu, Doc Savage, Hopalong Cassidy, John Carter of Mars, Sam Spade, The Shadow, Tarzan, Zorro, and many other pop culture icons.

PulpFest’s themes for 2025 are “Masters of Blood and Thunder” and “The Great Pulp Villains.”

2025 marks the 150th anniversary of the births of authors Edgar Rice Burroughs, Rafael Sabatini, and Edgar Wallace. Burroughs created Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, and other popular characters; Sabatini — who wrote historical fiction — is best known as the creator of the pirate, Captain Blood, played by Errol Flynn in 1935; and Edgar Wallace was England’s “King of the Thrillers.” He’s most remembered for writing the original screen story for King Kong.

The year also marks the 90th anniversary of Dr. Death, Doctor Satan, and the Mysterious Wu Fang, three villains that all debuted in the pulps of 1935.

PulpFest 2025 will also host three smaller conventions — Doc Con XXI (for Doc Savage fans), ERBFest 2025 (for fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his work), and Farmercon XX (for fans of science fiction writer Philip José Farmer).

Daily admission to the PulpFest dealers’ room — over 10,000 square feet — is $25 (or $50 for the entire convention). Admission to the PulpFest programming room and auction is free. Children under fifteen — when accompanied by an adult — are also admitted for free.

As our audience has grown, however, so have our operating costs: hosting is increasingly expensive, spreading the word about literary Pittsburgh to our readers via social media channels requires paid “boosts,” and we’re investing literally hundreds of volunteer hours into the site every year.
