Join Littsburgh’s Rachel Ekstrom Courage for a panel discussion with Yona Harvey (poet and writer for Marvel’s World of Wakanda and Black Panther & The Crew), Joshua David Bellin (Young Adult author of Survival Colony 9, Scavenger of Souls, and Freefall), and Caroline Carlson (author of several books for young readers, including The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates series and The World’s Greatest Detective).
The discussion will focus on literary and creative firsts — from first sentences to career and personal firsts.

Caroline Carlson is the author of several books for young readers, including The Very Nearly Honorable League of Pirates series and The World’s Greatest Detective (HarperCollins). Her book Magic Marks the Spot was a New York Times Editor’s Choice, an American Booksellers Association Best Book for Children, and a Junior Library Guild selection.
Caroline holds a BA from Swarthmore College and an MFA in Writing for Children from Vermont College of Fine Arts. A Massachusetts native, she now lives in Pittsburgh with her family.
Pittsburgh author Joshua David Bellin, a popular speaker at local schools and libraries, will discuss his Young Adult science fiction novels Survival Colony 9, Scavenger of Souls, and Freefall, focusing on the many surprising, exciting–and sometimes challenging–“firsts” in his writing career.
Yona Harvey is the author of the poetry collection, Hemming the Water, winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award from Claremont Graduate University and finalist for the Hurston-Wright Award. Her work has been anthologized in many publications including A Poet’s Craft: A Comprehensive Guide to Making and Sharing Your Poetry and The Force of What’s Possible: Accessibility and the Avant-Garde. She contributed to Marvel’s World of Wakanda anthology and co-wrote with Ta-Nehisi Coates Marvel’s Black Panther & The Crew.
She is an assistant professor in the Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh.
