“Ms. Lowry will speak Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall in Oakland as part of the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures Kids and Teens series.
Speaking on the phone from her home in Portland, Maine, Ms. Lowry explained that despite the fact she has been called the ‘godmother’ of dystopian young adult literature by Variety magazine, she dislikes that characterization.”

“Lois Lowry remembers reading about a woman who was psychiatrist or psychologist — Lowry can’t remember which — whose daughter had read the classic children’s book Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.
But in order to protect her child, the woman rewrote the book so Charlotte lived happily ever after.
‘That struck me as close to criminal,’ says Lowry, who will appear Nov. 22 at Carnegie Library Lecture Hall in Oakland as a guest of Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures’ Kids. ‘I think it’s a mistake to avoid things that may make children sad.'”
