Pittsburgh’s International Poetry Forum launches The Greatest Lines of All Time, a short-form podcast dedicated to exploring one great line of poetry per episode—participation is open to local writers, educators, artists, and other admirers of poetry and Pittsburgh!
From 1966 until 2009, Pittsburgh’s International Poetry Forum hosted poetry readings by over 800 of the world’s best poets and performers at Carnegie Lecture Hall, Carnegie Music Hall, and other venues across the city. Participants included nine Nobel laureates, 14 Academy Award recipients, 28 U.S. Poet Laureates, 39 National Book Award winners, and 47 Pulitzer Prize winners, counting legends such as Seamus Heaney, Tennessee Williams, Gwendolyn Brooks, Jorge Luis Borges, Kurt Vonnegut, James Earl Jones, Princess Grace of Monaco, and more.
This past year, International Poetry Forum founder Samuel Hazo announced the revival of the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit, with plans to resume its reading series and education programs in 2024-2025.
In the leadup to its relaunch, the organization is hosting a short-form podcast series celebrating the history of poetry in Pittsburgh. Episodes are extremely short (1-2 minutes), each focusing on a single great line of poetry by alumni of the International Poetry Forum and other poets with ties to Pittsburgh. The educational series will be hosted on the IPF’s Instagram and other platforms.
Participation is open to local writers, educators, artists, and other admirers of poetry and Pittsburgh. If you would like to pitch an episode for the series or would like to learn more, please send an email to Jake Grefenstette, the IPF’s new director, at director@internationalpoetryforum.org. Episodes can be recorded in-person or remotely.
