What is Shooting Stars, and who’s behind it?
Shooting Stars is a writing workshop for aspiring young writers aged 10-15, coached by Pittsburgh author Charlotte Hopkins. The group meets twice a month, on the first and third Saturdays, from 11 AM to 12 PM at the Jefferson Hills Library. Charlotte, who has published several books and has extensive experience in both writing and teaching, leads the group with a passion for nurturing young talent.
What inspired you to start this writing workshop?
As an author and a former educator, I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling. I wanted to create a space where young writers could come together, share their ideas, and develop their skills in a supportive environment. The joy and creativity these kids bring to their writing are truly inspiring, and I’m thrilled to help guide them on their journey.
Can you tell us about some of the young writers in your group?
Absolutely! Madison, a student at West Jefferson Hills School District, is an incredibly ambitious writer. She’s working on several books, including a murder mystery, a shape-shifter novel, and a vampire romance. Her dedication and creativity are impressive, and she’s exploring different genres with a lot of enthusiasm.
Then there’s Maxwell, a resident of Jefferson Hills, who just finished writing his first book, JT The Robber, which is the first in what he plans to be a series. He’s also working on a fun children’s book titled There is a Cat in My Popcorn. Maxwell’s JT The Robber is set to be released on September 14th, and we’re all looking forward to celebrating his achievement at a book signing event on September 22nd at the library.
What can you tell us about the upcoming book signing event?
We’re very excited to host Maxwell’s book signing event on September 22nd from 12 PM to 2 PM at the Jefferson Hills Library. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to come out and support one of our young local authors. Maxwell has put a lot of hard work into his book, and this event will be a great way to celebrate his success and encourage other young writers in our group.
What do you hope the participants gain from Shooting Stars?
My hope is that each participant gains confidence in their writing and discovers the joy of storytelling. I want them to feel supported in their creative endeavors and to know that their voices and ideas are valuable. Through Shooting Stars, they can connect with other young writers, learn from each other, and develop skills that will serve them well in the future, whether they pursue writing professionally or simply enjoy it as a creative outlet.
How can young writers get involved with Shooting Stars?
Anyone who is interested in joining or learning more about Shooting Stars can visit us at one of our meetings at the c. We meet on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 11 AM to 12 PM. New members are always welcome, and we encourage young writers to come and see what we’re all about!
