Happy Holidays to all yinz, and welcome to the 12 Days of Indies! My name is Joy Givens, and I’m here to make your December merry and bright by highlighting one of Pittsburgh’s fabulous independent bookstores each day, December 1-12. Keep reading to learn all about today’s featured bookstore, and check back daily for new store profiles, fun tidbits, ordering information, and more!
Day 2
On the second day of indies, we’re paying a virtual visit to a picturesque store in the heart of Sewickley. A stroll to the beautiful Penguin Bookshop, located at 417 Beaver Street, may make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, or perhaps hopped into a postcard. A beloved local institution, this charming shop has been stocking new books for over 90 years, and its recently renovated storefront includes generous shelf space for local authors and a lovely children’s section.
Just because this store has decades of history doesn’t mean it’s slowed down, though. On the contrary, Penguin offers many community events to feature local and visiting authors alike. In particular, the Penguin Bookshop Writers Series offers exciting conversations with authors, such as its upcoming event with Marie Benedict on December 9, and the store’s virtual storytime sessions with local author-illustrator Stefanie Hohl provide an expertly designed creative outlet just for kids!
Penguin Bookshop is staffed by knowledgeable, friendly book lovers who will take the time to help you find the perfect book, either on their shelves or through a special order. Metered street parking is available right outside the level-entry front door. Book buying options at Penguin are plentiful: browsing during regular business hours (masks and hand sanitizer required), direct-to-home shipping, in-store pickup, contactless pickup outside the store, and free home delivery for Sewickley addresses. You can also place orders online.
If you want to feel like you’ve been dropped onto the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie during your holiday book shopping, then Penguin Bookshop is the place for you!
