Happy Holidays to all yinz, and welcome to the 12 Days of Indies! My name is Joy Givens, and I’m here to make your December merry and bright by highlighting one of Pittsburgh’s fabulous independent bookstores each day, December 1-12. Keep reading to learn all about today’s featured bookstore, and check back daily for new store profiles, fun tidbits, ordering information, and more!
Day 7
On the seventh day of indies, we’re swinging by Pittsburgh’s newest used bookstore, a funky, cozy spot in the heart of town: Shadyside Books! Located at 5900 Ellsworth Avenue, on the second floor of the Caboodle Trading Post, this walkup bookstore opened its doors in December 2018. Since then, it has amassed a rolling inventory of over 5,000 used books, specializing in history, arts, and sciences, as well as a variety of rare and collectible volumes.
If you stop by this unique, elevated space and stroll its herringbone hardwood floors, you’ll find a well-organized trove of used books at great prices, tucked into a chic atmosphere. Even if you’re social distancing from fellow humans as recommended, you can still bring a furry shopping buddy with you on a trip to this bookstore; dogs are welcome here, and unlike human customers, they don’t even need masks!
Shadyside Books does have in-person shopping hours (see below), but this store has adapted particularly well to the pandemic by keeping an updated catalog of its stock online for easy ordering. If you have a certain book in mind for yourself or someone else, you can instantly check in with Shadyside Books, and standard shipping is free for orders over $10!
If you want to pick up hard-to-find literary treasures without leaving your house, or by visiting a smart spot with city charm, Shadyside Books can provide just what you’re looking for!
