Happy Holidays to all yinz, and welcome to the 12 Days of Indies! My name is Joy Givens, and I’m here to make your December merry and bright by highlighting one of Pittsburgh’s fabulous independent bookstores each day, December 1-12. Keep reading to learn all about today’s featured bookstore, and check back daily for new store profiles, fun tidbits, ordering information, and more!
Day 9
On the ninth day of indies, I invite you to head back up to the North Hills of Pittsburgh—McCandless Crossing, to be exact—and check out a beautiful bookstore that truly has something for everyone: Riverstone Bookstore! One of Pittsburgh’s newest bookstores, Riverstone has quickly become a pillar of the surrounding community. It’s large enough to keep a wide array of books, toys, games, fair trade items, and other gifts in stock, but small enough that you can count on the assistance of a knowledgeable book lover as soon as you enter.
Riverstone founder and owner Barbara Jeremiah has put together a lovely space, with plenty of natural light and a well-thought-out floorplan; the stacks are exceptionally easy to navigate, including a sizeable children’s section. The store also offers numerous programs for young readers, such as a K-5 summer reading program, a regular storytime, and a Teen Council advisory board.
Riverstone is particularly active in supporting the literary community by connecting readers and writers. It regularly hosts and promotes events with local authors like Stephanie Keyes and has sponsored larger community events like Kate’s Kid Book Bash, honoring the late, wonderful Kate Dopirak. The store’s online shop opens up an even broader range of books for speedy in-store pickup and delivery, as well as audiobook memberships, making it even easier to find just the right gift.
Whether McCandless Crossing is just a hop and a skip away for you or a bit more of a drive, a visit to the charming Riverstone Bookstore is well worth the trip any time of the year!
