The Remembering Room opens at Atithi Studios on March 9 and 10 (and runs through April 16th, 2023).
SHARPSBURG—The Remembering Room, an interactive art exhibit exploring grief, will open at Atithi Studios, 1020 N Canal Street in Sharpsburg, on March 10. The Remembering Room is the debut visual art exhibition of Pittsburgh-based internationally recognized author, writer and creator, Amanda Filippelli.
The exhibit will open to the public March 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The exhibition is inspired by Filippelli’s new book of poetry, where she explores her journey with grief through unexpectedly losing her father and becoming pregnant with a baby boy two weeks later, and amidst losing her dog an exact year later to the same illness that took her father.
The Remembering Room merges Filippelli’s life-changing story with an exploratory and healing experience that fosters learning, growing and connecting in our own experiences of grief.
“It’s so hard for people to give themselves permission to grieve without feeling like a burden, and we’re all quietly grieving something right now,” Filippelli said. “I created The Remembering Room to authentically share my own grieving process in the hopes of opening up conversations and connections with others, but it is also meant to be a space where anyone can go to sit with their own feelings without any judgment or expectation at all—because that’s where healing begins.”
Visitors progress through 4 rooms that represent the 4 stages of grief Filippelli explores with a surrealist interpretation. The rooms offer space for visitors to sit and contemplate as well as artifacts for them to interact with. They will also have the opportunity to contribute to this living exhibit by adding their own artifacts and/or writing in and on designated spaces of the exhibit.
