“United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania hosted its seventh annual Big Book Drop event on April 15-17 at Acrisure Stadium, where volunteers sorted, labeled and packed 35,000 children’s books featuring relatable characters and positive themes. Literacy-focused organizations from across the counties United Way serves — Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Fayette and Westmoreland — picked up the boxes of books on Thursday.
Speaking to volunteers at the event, Damon Bethea, United Way’s Manager of Building for Success in School and Life, said that reading is an essential building block.
“What you are doing here today will help thousands of our region’s children to discover a love of reading, receive a book they will read and hopefully fall in love with, help a family in building a library of reading memories or give a child their first book.”
United Way is committed to expanding early literacy and since 2019 has donated more than 214,000 books to kids in our region through the annual Big Book Drop.”
