Program collective Write Pittsburgh announces their new publishing division, starting with youth-focused literary magazine Starry False Lily.
Write Pittsburgh’s publishing endeavors first started in 2018 with the anthology Oeuvre, which features work from participants in their many Pittsburgh-area programs.
In 2022, the program collective is expanding their reach by forming a publishing division, run by longtime Write Pittsburgh organizer Sheena Carroll. Starry False Lily is the debut publication. A quarterly online literary magazine, Starry False Lily is open to submissions from young writers from around the world.
The online magazine welcomes poetry, short prose (fiction and nonfiction), spoken word audio, visual art, and photography. Editors are also interested in pitches and completed articles related to writing, pop and alt culture, and current events. They encourage submissions from youths and young adults aged 21 and under—especially artists whose works are often marginalized such as women, Black artists, LBGTQIA+ artists, and disabled artists.
This new publishing division hopes to expand and solidify Write Pittsburgh’s place in the region’s literary arts space and to provide platforms for young artists to share their thoughts and creations.
“We’re excited to provide a new outlet for young artists,” said Publishing Director Sheena Carroll. “It feels like a logical next step for Write Pittsburgh; after workshopping their pieces, many writers are then interested in publishing them. We hope that Starry False Lily and our future projects will become valued publishing opportunities for writers in the Greater Pittsburgh Area and around the world!”
Submissions for Starry False Lily are open now. Interested artists can submit via the relevant Google Forms at writepittsburgh.com. Those who are interested in volunteering as readers or editors, or those with any additional inquiries can email starryfalselily@writepittsburgh.com.
